A little Wyoming in Houston

This is a photo from the Grand Prismatic Pool in Yellowstone National Park.  What a cool place to visit. I did fieldwork in Wyoming for about 11 years before I actually stepped my foot inside Yellowstone.  I finally had my opportunity to do a little geotourism there during the summer of 2007.  My daughter was 3 at the time –… (more…)

The very local artists…

Back to the walls for a moment… Our walls are currently covered with art… I’m proud to say that the majority of it is art from local artists.  Really local. Eric and I tend to frame our own photos.   As geologists, we’ve done a fair bit to traveling.  After all, it’s easier for you to go see the rocks than… (more…)

Heat… toes… good…

This is an exercise in sensory perception – that being said, you’ll need to find a friend to read this to you… Ready? Close your eyes. Room – cold – wintry morning, ice sketched across the window panes, daylight peeking through the pine trees playing with the frosted panes.  You – warm – hunkered down under that down comforter, like… (more…)

You gotta have vision.

OK – maybe I’m preaching to the choir here – but I just have to bring it up. Say you’re like me, and that the little TV attached to the elliptical at the gym is always tuned to HGTV… and you’re at the mercy of what ever home show is on – for the next 45-60 minutes.  If you’re lucky,… (more…)

Location, location, location.

Hmmm, you learn something new every day.  Case in point: Directly from Merriam-Webster.com Lo-ca-tion: noun “1 a : a position or site occupied or available for occupancy or marked by some distinguishing feature : situation b (1) : a tract of land designated for a purpose (2) Australian : farm, station c : a place outside a motion-picture studio where… (more…)

I loved that (new) old bathroom

and then, if you turn around and look behind you, you find… Oh, yeah… that’s the old bathroom in Houston.  It was gigantic by our neighborhood’s standards.  The previous owner told me that, before they turned it into the master bathroom, it used to be a sewing room for the German sisters that lived there prior to them. From the… (more…)

Neighborhood inspiration.

This is it.  A fancy ‘garage’ attached to an historic house in my neighborhood.  I’m drawn to it.  I like the white-tan-gray stone foundation – I like the gray – almost gray-blue color of the structure.  I like how crisp the white window frames look against the solid gray clapboard siding.  Look – there’s even a transom window over the… (more…)

Wanna buy a house in Seattle?

Time to use Building Character as a force for good. My brother-in-law and his family have their house on the market it Seattle. It’s a beauty… Jeff & Chris did all of the home renovations themselves. AND Jeff just added a bathroom upstairs – the paint may still be drying… Whether or not you’re in the market for a house… (more…)

Distracted by Life.

Yep.  I admitted yesterday – that I was distracted by….. life.  Which is not the goal really.  I should be fully engaged in life, present – in the moment.  Time for a course correction! In search of a balance I started writing this blog just about 1 month ago… it’s been a learning curve for sure.  Literally, one month and… (more…)

Climbing the walls…

It’s snowy here in Wisconsin.  I can barely see my mailbox – my backyard is hibernating… I’m going to attempt to melt snow tomorrow with my mind.  (I’m great at visualization – not so great at winter sports) While I’m climbing the walls, my thoughts turn to – the walls.  Right now, my walls are still marked by the previous… (more…)
