A little Wyoming in Houston

Yellowstone

This is a photo from the Grand Prismatic Pool in Yellowstone National Park.  What a cool place to visit.

I did fieldwork in Wyoming for about 11 years before I actually stepped my foot inside Yellowstone.  I finally had my opportunity to do a little geotourism there during the summer of 2007.  My daughter was 3 at the time – and was totally in awe of the ‘steamy earth’.  My favorite memory of that particular trip happened while we were standing among the masses of tourists waiting for Old Faithful to blow.  When it finally did – the wind was blowing in our direction and we were getting misted with warm water.  Claudia absolutely freaked out.  I’m not sure exactly what was running through her mind, but she was truly in a panic.  Perhaps she thought we might melt – that the water would burn us or something…  Didn’t take her long to cool down, and to once again appreciate the steaminess of the earth.

The photo above turned out to be an inspirational one.  The colors are amazing – and look so perfect together.  We ended up designing our bathroom around it.  Let’s do a quick comparison…

Yellowstone: (with new bathroom color scheme)

This lovely rusty orangey color (aka the bacterial mats at the Grand Prismatic Pool) – was the inspiration for our towels.

You can see that the wood floor in the bathroom had tones similar to the Pool as well.  The sky that day was so blue, and the stark burnt hillside behind the Pool was still very charred from a major wildfire.  We chose Sherwin Williams “resolute blue” for our walls, and black paint for the furniture.  And I actually didn’t realize it until just now, but we did choose a green-blue glass accent tile in the shower that looks an awful lot like the water in the Pool.

I miss that bathroom – we may end up re-creating it in our new place…

You just can’t go wrong borrowing the color schemes of nature.  That my lesson learned.

Thanks again Gene – you’ve got me thinking about my field photos and getting them out there for others to see… It’s a good way to combine what I love with what I love…
