Natural Color Palettes: Firehole Canyon

My Yellowstone photo has inspired me to see what other color palettes that I can find in my field photos.  This will be the first of a series  – here it goes.

Green River Formation

This is a photo from Firehole Canyon in southwestern Wyoming.  You can’t tell from this photo – but this picture was taken from a pretty decent elevation.  It took about 45 minutes to climb up to this point – and my colleague and I did this everyday for about 1.5 weeks – measuring and describing the rocks along the way.  What you’re looking at is the Laney Member of the Green River Formation – the rocks that I focused on for my dissertation.  The orange sandstone at the top of the hill is called the Sand Butte Bed, and if you ever drive through Wyoming on I-80 – you’ll see it up close and personal between Rock Springs and Green River.  The Green River Formation is home to lots of these babies:

But I digress, once again.

Let’s get back to the colors in this photo… what I did was to fire up Photoshop and use the eyedropper tool to determine the main colors in this photo.

It’s a pretty nice color palette, don’t you think?  I’d like to see what it looks like used in a room…

oh I like that palette! I would not paint the walls blue because it is a very cool colour and can be over whelming in the winter. I would paint the walls the 6th one in (pale green colour) and use the blues as accents like pillows or on paintings. That beautiful brown would look nice as window coverings. See if you can find a nice pattern with your colours :) And yeah take that photo and blow it up and put that on your wall. It will look great :)
