Badger Summit 2.0

We’re in Costa Rica this week – a little vacation that we like to call the Badger Summit (Badger Summit 2.0 to be precise).  We’ve decided to vacation once every 3 years with friends from graduate school.  Turns out, the 4 couples each have daughters about the same age – so it’s kinda nice to get the girls together too. … (more…)

Latest Creation

It’s called OpArt, you can see the pattern here.  It took me – oh, about 6 months to make… I fear that my new blogging hobby has put a crimp on my knitting time – just a bit. I used Sublime – cashmere merino silk DK, and a lot of it.  More than the pattern called for actually.  It’s knit… (more…)

My garden gnome…

Mini-garden makeover in progress… BEFORE Once upon a time, until maybe 4 years ago, there was a huge pine tree in the middle of my backyard.  You can still see this tree on the google map… it was a biggie.  Word on the street (previous owners & neighbors) was that this tree was struck by lightning and split in half. … (more…)

Garages I’ve known

Let me think back in time, to reminisce about garages that I’ve known.  In fact, I think I need a reminder… yes, let me check the dictionary for a moment. Garage:  a shelter or repair shop for automotive vehicles.  Merriam-Webster says that it’s from the French word garrer – to dock, and maybe even from the Old Norse vara –… (more…)

Backyard canvas…

There they are… cryogenically preserved finally seeing the light of day – no snow left as of this week. Let’s remember what this will look like in a few months time, here’s a shot from the garden last year… *sigh* Alas, it’s now a blank canvas. So, after the 1-3″-of-snow-that-is-predicted-for-this-weekend melts away, I’ll work that compost into these babies and… (more…)

Irony not lost

This fine welcome sign was a gift to me from my family.  I like it, it’s got great colors and textures and it adds a bit of decoration to the front entryway. Note the hole in the shingle directly above it?   Apparently our resident woodpecker found this sign to be welcoming too. Not the kind of character I’m going for… (more…)

Spring has sprung!

I know that I may be tempting fate here… but the stars are aligning – the snow has melted from my yard, it’s been in the 50′s out there – and predicted to be in the 50′s for the rest of the week, and daylight savings time has begun.  Now that I can see my gardens, I’m makin’ plans!  First,… (more…)

Natural Color Palettes: Topsail Beach

Here’s a moment in time – captured on Topsail Beach, NC last fall.  We were at my sister-in-law’s wedding waiting to get our professional photos snapped.  This one captures the mood of the moment very nicely.  I love my boys The warm colors in the foreground and the cool colors in the background give this photo a nice balance.  Again… (more…)

Foodshed Challenge…

Today – something a bit different.  It’s 50 degrees out, and raining… and wow is that snow melting out there.  I can almost see my raised beds.  I’m dying to get out there and garden.  While I dream of lettuce and tomatoes and potatoes and broccoli and carrots and herbs and cabbage… and supplementing my own haul with the CSA… (more…)

Knobbers, knockers, and counter intelligence…

This is some rock, isn’t it?  I stumbled upon this one at the Madison Area Builder’s Association Home Products Show last weekend.  It’s actually a counter top, but doesn’t it look 3D?  Very cool. I’m not exactly sure what kind of rock it is either…  In fact, neither was the guy trying to sell it to me.  The sign on… (more…)
