Mini-garden makeover in progress…

BEFORE

Where the stump was ground down

Once upon a time, until maybe 4 years ago, there was a huge pine tree in the middle of my backyard.  You can still see this tree on the google map… it was a biggie.  Word on the street (previous owners & neighbors) was that this tree was struck by lightning and split in half.  So, it had to be removed.

When the tree came down, the sun came into the backyard.  Hasta’s withered… it was ugly back there.  It was perfect for raising veggies…. but I digress.

Last year, we had the stump ground down – and ended up with enough mulch to fill all of the beds.  Here’s a photo of the mulch pile – it was fun to play on!

Mulch pile

So, now that the mulch pile has been relocated – the executive decision was made to plant a garden where the tree once stood.

Remember this garden?  Doesn’t look like much now – and even when it was in full bloom – it was only OK.  But it’s full of rocks – rocks that get buried under towering unidentified greenery.

Those rocks will be better served… over here.

AFTER (well, in progress)

Relocated rocks

They don’t look too bad over there, do they?  I need to fill it in with more soil and make a planting plan… I’m hoping to plant some flowers in this bed, but it’ll need some height in the center.  Any ideas?

Dramatic re-enactment

I started to move these rocks around the back yard last Sunday afternoon… and I had some great help.  My little guy jumped right in – he was grunting, and heaving rocks around, saying “it’s too heavy”… he cracked me up!  I had him out there today to try to recreate the moment, with some success.  This guy needs a camera crew at all times.
