Adventure West: Day 5

Day 5: This is what at least half of day 5 looked like, leading us toward Bellingham, WA.  In my opinion, eastern Washington State has really been overshadowed by western Washington State.  This country is beautiful!  The topography here is a geomorphologist’s dream… these rolling hills are enormous features formed by the catastrophic release of water from glacial Lake Missoula. … (more…)

Adventure West: Day 4

Day 4: After spending the night in Bozeman, we continued westward on I-90, headed toward Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Here’s where we crossed the Continental Divide -  sure doesn’t look like raindrops that fall on the other side of this overpass head west… I suppose there’s some slop in the location of signage at the divide.  The divide is around Butte,… (more…)

Adventure West: Day 2

Day 2: It was this guy… or one of his cronies.  Taking his morning constitutional steps away from our tent.  Bison were everywhere in Custer State Park.  And, BONUS!  They were in rut.  We were told not to approach them, which I thought was quite reasonable.  I can’t tell you how many people were inching their way closer and closer… (more…)

Adventure West: Day 1

Hello there!  It sure has been awhile.  I’m suddenly compelled to get a few things out into the ether…  I wish I could say that I’ve been taking a sabbatical from the google tubes… but alas, I’ve just been focusing my efforts on other priorities – like my day job, and an even higher priority – myself.  Back to our… (more…)

On the road again…

One quick week home… it went like this… Gardening, cleaning, 90-day planning, connecting, networking, things-are-looking-up!  Spring is springing and work is working! But I’m back on the road – in New Orleans this week – focusing on my day job.  It’s conference time.  Here’s my prediction: Excitement, networking, (beer), planning, geology, lunching, dining, (beer), schmoozing… a bit of shopping…. fading….… (more…)

My garden gnome…

Mini-garden makeover in progress… BEFORE Once upon a time, until maybe 4 years ago, there was a huge pine tree in the middle of my backyard.  You can still see this tree on the google map… it was a biggie.  Word on the street (previous owners & neighbors) was that this tree was struck by lightning and split in half. … (more…)

Backyard canvas…

There they are… cryogenically preserved finally seeing the light of day – no snow left as of this week. Let’s remember what this will look like in a few months time, here’s a shot from the garden last year… *sigh* Alas, it’s now a blank canvas. So, after the 1-3″-of-snow-that-is-predicted-for-this-weekend melts away, I’ll work that compost into these babies and… (more…)

Knobbers, knockers, and counter intelligence…

This is some rock, isn’t it?  I stumbled upon this one at the Madison Area Builder’s Association Home Products Show last weekend.  It’s actually a counter top, but doesn’t it look 3D?  Very cool. I’m not exactly sure what kind of rock it is either…  In fact, neither was the guy trying to sell it to me.  The sign on… (more…)

Natural Color Palettes: Yellowstone

Here we have Yellowstone again – my inspiration photo for the old bathroom remodel.  This photo of the Grand Prismatic Pool has so many colors in it – it could inspire more than one room in my house… I like this palette because it has a cooler end and a warmer end… that mimics nature in fact; warmer colors for… (more…)

Minutiae

This is tiny… really tiny… each one of these dots is actually 0.06-0.08 mm in diameter.  That’s 60-80 microns across.  I took this photo on a camera with 5.6x zoom that is attached to a microscope set at 10x magnification.   It’s a pretty cool pattern – the dots are fairly round, with sharp edges – some run together a bit…… (more…)
